Burzahom

Located at Batapora, Srinagar, Burzahom is a historical site that has great archaeological significance. Between 3000 BC and 1000 BC; the site had been occupied by Neolithic, Megalithic, and post-Megalithic settlements. Archaeological excavations have revealed tools made of bone and stone indicating that the inhabitants were hunters and farmers. The tools are believed to have a certain ritualistic practices that the people were involved in back then. The type of tools recovered from the site was deduced as resembling those found in the North Chinese Neolithic culture. Even the burial sites found at Burzahom are similar to the Chinese culture. Different housing structures can be found at the site, that reveals the evolution of ground-level Neolithic houses to the mud-brick houses of megalithic period. The architecture, art, and engravings found here provide evidence for the involvement of foreign cultures in Kashmir. The first ever archaeological excavation at Burzahom was done by the Yale-Cambridge Expedition under the leadership of Helmut de Terra in 1936.Burzahom portrays the many facets of history embedded in monuments, acting as a gateway to the history of an unwritten past.
