- Sultan Mahmud Begada or Mahmud Shah I, popularly known as the “Poison Sultan of Gujarat”, was the most prominent Sultan of Gujarat Sultanate. His full name was Abu’l Fath Nasir-Ud-Din Mahmud Shah 1. There is a strange reason, why Sultan Mahmud was known as the Poison sultan of Gujarat. As per European chronicles, there was an attempt to poison the Sultan in his childhood once. Ever since, he was fed toxins/poisons in measured doses daily, to make his body immune to it. It is said if “a fly touched him, as soon as it reached his flesh it forthwith died”.
